Show Summary
11/16/18
November 16, 2018
In segment one, Barry Lynn interviews MARGARET DOWNEY who is a non-theist activist and founder and President of the Freethought Society.  She became a publicly known activist when she challenged the Boy Scouts to admit non-theistic  young men and later when she successfully fought for a secular presence in the Free Speech Zone in Philadelphia by erecting a “Tree of Knowledge”.  The “tree” is a spruce decorated with covers of books on atheism, science and the separation of church and state (including one written by this podcast’s host).
On the show today she takes on the weirdness and dangers of superstitions- ranging from astrology columns to fear of black cats.  She holds regular parties on Friday the 13th as a way to combat Triskaidekaphobia (the fear of Friday the 13th).  Indeed, Ms. Downey notes that she is the only officially licensed “Treatment Nurse” to deal with this malady.  Belief in superstitions, however, can lead to terrible results as well and a look at albinism completes the segment. In segment two, Barry Lynn interviews SUSAN TALBOT REID who is a Connecticut singer and songwriter out with her first CD “Bridges To Home”.  Mentored by great musicians including Pete Seeger and Tom Pacheco (author of the song about Juan Romero with which we started the return of “Cultureshocks”), she has produced an extraordinarily beautiful collection of traditional songs and modern acoustic classics.  She is a terrific banjo player as well as a sparkling iinterpreter of tunes you will hear on this podcast.
